Marie Balter is perhaps the most amazing and uplifting story to come out of the Mental Health System of Massachusetts. Having been put up for adoption during the depression, Marie was landed in a home with abusive adoptive parents. She developed anxiety and depression early in her life, and eventually found herself admitted to Danvers State Hospital Insane Asylum. While admitted there she was misdiagnosed as schitzophrenic, and placed on near leathal doses of an experimental drug. Eventually she took herself off the medication and turned to her strong faith in God. That faith woul ddrive her to get well enough to eventually leave Danvers State, get married to the love of her life, Joe, and then Graduate from Harvard Grad School. After obtaining a degree from Harvard she returned to Danvers State to bring about incredible change and reform which kept in mind what the patient experience was. Marie then went on to form the Balter Institute where she hoped that her patient led idea of mental healthcare would continue. This video is Marie in her own words, and gives incredible insight into real life in the Aslums of Massachusetts. The video is in four 15 minute parts. Feel free to watch them at your leasure. |
