| Stately crowning the top of a spire on Danvers State Hospital Insane Asylum for more than 100 years, the wrought iron lighting rod picture in this inverse black and white picture is typical of Dr. Thomas Kirkbride's theory of surrounding the mentally ill with beauty. Each of the several spires that gilded the roof of Danvers State was adorned with its own ornate lightning rod, with slightly varying designs of flowers and crowns. No expense was spared in the construction of Danvers State and it was a self sustaining/self contained community. Even the bricks that the building was composed of were made at a factory at the bottom of Hawthorne Hill.
